We’re not a ride-hailing app or an anonymous booking broker. Every trip runs on a flat rate agreed before you travel and a driver who’s ready when you are, not one scrambling to find you.

Driving the GTA Since 1986

When we started driving in 1986, the world looked a little different.

Around the GTA

Everyone shared the 416 area code (905 didn’t arrive until 1993), Toronto was still six separate municipalities, and there was no 407. Construction on SkyDome began that fall, the Leafs played at Maple Leaf Gardens, and the Blue Jays called Exhibition Stadium home.

  • Gas: about 56 cents a litre.
  • SkyDome: ground was broken on October 3, 1986.
  • Blue Jays: 86–76 at Exhibition Stadium. Tony Fernández became the first Jay with 200 hits in a season (213).
  • Fog at the Ex: on June 12, Kelly Gruber hit an inside-the-park home run in the fog.
  • Leafs: opened the 1986–87 season on October 9 with a 7–4 win over the Canadiens at Maple Leaf Gardens.

Across Canada

Brian Mulroney was Prime Minister, Expo 86 was drawing the world to Vancouver, and the dollar was still a paper bill. The Loonie arrived in 1987.

  • Expo 86: ran May 2 to October 13 and drew over 22 million visitors. The theme was transportation and communication.
  • The dollar: hit an all-time low of about 70 U.S. cents on January 31.
  • FIFA World Cup: Canada’s men’s soccer team played in its first one.
  • Grey Cup: the Hamilton Tiger-Cats beat Edmonton 39–15.
  • Nobel Prize: John Polanyi of the University of Toronto shared the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his work on how chemical reactions happen at the molecular level.

At the Airports

Pearson had just two terminals; Terminal 3 wouldn’t open until 1991. Billy Bishop was still the Toronto Island Airport, and the only way to reach it was by ferry.

  • A new name: Pearson had been renamed for Lester B. Pearson only two years earlier, in 1984.
  • Two terminals: the original Terminal 1 (1964) and Terminal 2 (1972).
  • Terminal 3: a 1986 plan recommended that it be built by the private sector.

A Legendary Year in Sports

NHLCanadiens win the Stanley Cup; Gretzky sets a record with 215 points.
MLBMets beat the Red Sox in seven games, with Game 6 an all-time classic.
NFLThe Bears win Super Bowl XX.
NBABird’s Celtics beat the Rockets.

On the Radio and the Big Screen

Cassettes ruled the car stereo, and the whole country was singing along or lining up at the theatre.

  • How Will I Know – Whitney Houston
  • Kiss – Prince
  • Addicted to Love – Robert Palmer
  • Greatest Love of All – Whitney Houston
  • Papa Don’t Preach – Madonna
  • Sledgehammer – Peter Gabriel
  • Take My Breath Away – Berlin
  • Walk Like an Egyptian – The Bangles

Hit movies

  • Top Gun – the year’s biggest movie
  • Crocodile Dundee
  • The Karate Kid Part II
  • Back to School
  • Aliens
  • Ferris Bueller’s Day Off
  • Stand By Me
  • Platoon – won Best Picture

Technology

Cell phones were the size of a brick, directions came from a paper map, and booking a ride meant picking up a landline.

  • First cellular call: made in Canada on July 1, 1985, by Toronto’s mayor to Montreal’s mayor, on a 10-pound phone.
  • The price: a phone and service cost $2,000 to $6,000, and only 10,000 to 15,000 Canadians had one by the end of 1985.
  • 1986: Ted Rogers took control of Cantel, Canada’s national cellular company.

What Hasn’t Changed Since 1986?

Planes, phones, and Toronto’s skyline have all changed. We haven’t: same family ownership, same standards, and every call still answered directly.
